What’s Up with
the Red Sharpie?

Partner Nick Korn was working as a barback at a high volume cocktail bar. The program had a lot of house-made ingredients: syrups, infusions, and bitters at various stages of completion. Nick started to label his tape with a red sharpie—instead of the customary black that the rest of the team used—as a way of keeping track of which projects he had started. The bar was going through growing pains and there were consistency issues which started affecting drink specs. Everything needed to be tasted and there were a few heartbreaking incidents where gallons of product had to be poured down the drain. In this tumultuous environment, the team learned that they could rely on the products with labels written in red.

The red sharpie came to signify a job well done, pride in one’s work. Wield your sharpie with responsibility, stand in your confidence, and mark your work proudly in red.

Our Values

OFFSITE holds the following pillars as central to our company’s values. We evaluate our company, its projects, and our work against these pillars in an attempt to effect change in our community and beyond. We set aside time to discuss and improve upon these values as a team, commit to actions to continue to pursue them, and set measurable goals to evaluate our progress. We are committed to continuing to do this work, which is never truly complete.

  • Examine who is included and who is excluded from the experiences that we create. Pursue inclusive design through collaboration with clients, staff, participants, and their communities to address the variation in capabilities, needs, and aspirations of the diverse hospitality industry.

  • Support local independent businesses in a steady and sustainable way; among these, prioritize BIPOC and LGBTQ+ owned and operated businesses.

  • Hire with intention and promote from within. Ask “Who is represented and who is not?” Implement equitable hiring processes by identifying and removing potential biases in sourcing, screening, and shortlisting qualified, diverse candidates.

  • Acknowledge the role our business plays in perpetuating climate injustice and continuously commit to building a more sustainable future.

  • Recognize that power structures exist in society that enable injustice and violence. Actively seek to create and sustain an empowering work environment—extended to our clients and contractors—that facilitates open dialogue, acknowledges imperfection, combats issues, and implements solutions.

  • Our company exists within a community context. Commit to contributing to the improvement of the social, economic, and environmental well-being of the communities in which we work.

  • Create opportunities to build capacity and agency among our community, and contribute to expanding access to a diverse range of knowledge, skills, and career opportunities.

  • Engage and amplify a broad range of voices from throughout the hospitality industry. Actively pursue and promote initiatives that support the community and its sustainable development.
